Leading indicators are used to measure an organizations safety performance. In the past we often relied on lagging indicators to measure our safety performance. Lagging indicators such as injury frequency, historical data that describes our safety performance based on the number of incidents we have had. The issues with this kind of measure are obvious.
Leading indicators don’t use historical data as our measure of performance. Leading indicators look at the activities being conducted to help prevent incidents.
